Bushfly maggots and Crickets are excellent, balanced livefood sources for finches and softbills. They are both quite easy to breed yourself, but providing access to water can be challenging. Crickets in particular have a weird habit of drowning themselves in any water, even drinkers. You can easily have 20-30 adult crickets end up inside a drinker, all drowned and stinking. Likewise adult flies will also drown in water reservoirs and rapidly turn the water putrid.

Naturally for Birds now has available 4cm Cotton Rolls which can overcome this problem. Simply insert one cotton roll into the tongue of a large drinker as shown. The advantage of the cotton roll is that your flies or crickets can suck water from the roll, but can’t enter the drinker.
